Best Camping Sites in Northern Wisconsin

With the Mississippi River to the southeast, Lake Michigan to the northwest, the Nicolet National Forest, private locations, and state parks to choose from, Wisconsin offers plenty of excellent camping options.

It is a state that boasts natural beauty at every corner, and campers are treated to stunning scenery and a plethora of activities. Pack your camping gear, rent an RV, load up the car, and head out to any of the following camping sites in Northern Wisconsin.

Apostle Islands Area Campground

Located just 15 minutes from the Chequamegon National Forest and about an hour from Copper Falls State Park, this camp can accommodate everything from small tents to the largest motorhomes. It’s well-kept and boasts excellent amenities, including flush toilets, showers, a camp store, and a gift shop. The ground is run by a friendly staff, and the site has a welcoming atmosphere for campers of all ages. You can also rent campers, cabins, and mopeds, and 20-30-50 amp services are available. Nearby activities include hiking, mountain biking, sailing tours, and kayaking to the famous Sea Caves.

Big Bay State Park

Big Bay State Park sits on 4 miles of Lake Superior’s shoreline, encompassing a 1.5-mile long beach. Located at the northernmost point of Madeline Island, the largest of all the Apostle Islands, the state park offers the serenity of nature, stunning views of sandstone bluffs, and the perfect chance to explore various habitats, including boreal forest, barrier beach, and old growth hemlock. There are nine miles of trails, a boardwalk leading to the beach, and fishing and hunting opportunities in the park.

Wildwood Haven

Located just 40 minutes from Ashland along the Long Lake shoreline, Wildwood Haven is surrounded by pristine nature destinations, including Ashland County Forest, Copper Falls State Park, Lake Superior, and the Chequamegon National Forest. The family-friendly campground can accommodate both tents and RVs, with facilities that include water and electricity hook-ups. There are several docks for swimming and fishing, a playground, a boat launch, a fish cleaning house, and more. Long Lake is just within walking distance.

Kreher Park

If you’re a resident of Ashland, you don’t even need to leave the city for a great camping experience. Kreher Park is found at the end of North Prentice Avenue, just a few minutes from the downtown and marina areas. Sitting on the shores of Lake Superior along the Waterfront Trail, this RV-only campsite features water and electrical hookups, a playground, a beach for swimming, and a boat landing.

Prentice Park

Conveniently located in Ashland, Prentice Park is nestled in a boreal forest that will make you forget you’re just minutes away from city amenities. Lake Superior’s Maslowski Beach is just a short walk from the campsite, and there’s easy access to ADA hiking trails. Small RVs and tents are welcome here, and amenities include electricity and water hookups, shower facilities, a boat launch, a playground, and more.

Little Sand Bay Campground

Operated by the town of Russell, a little less than an hour from Ashland, Little Sand Bay Campground features 32 RV sites, 13 tent sites, and a large group site with a gazebo. Found on the shores of Lake Superior, the campsite includes a swimming beach and a boat ramp and dock. Camping facilities include electricity, showers, water spigots, sanitary stations.
